Jakarta, June 5, 2026 – Deputy Minister of Creative Economy/Deputy Head of the Creative Economy Agency, Irene Umar, emphasized the importance of building an ecosystem capable of transforming creativity into sustainable economic value through the management of Intellectual Property (IP). She delivered this message during the Jakarta-Berlin Creative Collaboration panel session at the Jakarta Future Festival (JFF) 2026 held at Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta, on Friday (5/6).
Deputy Minister of Creative Economy Irene Umar served as one of the speakers at the Jakarta-Berlin Creative Collaboration panel session during Jakarta Future Festival (JFF) 2026 at Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM), Jakarta, on Friday (5/6/2026).
“Our current challenge is bridging creative practice with the creative economy. Creators need to view their works as IP assets that can be protected, developed, and commercialized through various business opportunities such as licensing, merchandise, and cross-media adaptations,” said Irene.
According to Irene, Jakarta is currently experiencing an important momentum marked by the growth of creative communities, the emergence of new talents, and an increasing number of local works capable of competing on the global stage. To maximize this momentum, spaces that connect creators with markets, investors, and international networks are essential.
“Festivals, communities, and collaborative spaces serve as important infrastructure for the creative economy. It is through these meeting points that business opportunities, cross-sector partnerships, and access to global markets are created. This is where the Ministry of Creative Economy comes in as an enabler and connector for creative economy players,” Irene added.

The forum, a collaboration between AsiaBerlin and the Jakarta Provincial Government, served as a platform for exchanging ideas between creative economy stakeholders from Jakarta and Berlin. The event also followed up on discussions regarding cooperation between the Ministry of Creative Economy and AsiaBerlin held in May, particularly concerning the expansion of international market access, creative talent exchange, and the strengthening of creative economy networks between the two cities.
In addition to the discussion session, the event featured the Urban Green Goods Design Competition Presentation, showcasing works by designers who created mascots and merchandise representing the creative identities of Jakarta and Berlin as sister cities.
Ralf Ostendorf, Director of Market Management at visitBerlin, highlighted the important role of intercity creative partnerships in fostering innovation and generating new economic opportunities.
“Creativity flourishes when a city provides space for diversity, collaboration, and innovation. Through the Jakarta-Berlin partnership, we see tremendous opportunities to connect creative talents from both cities and create shared value with a global impact,” said Ralf.

One tangible outcome of the partnership was realized through the Design Competition Pitching session, which featured presentations by finalists of the Urban Green Goods Design Competition. The competition provided a platform for designers to develop works rooted in local stories while strengthening the exchange of ideas, creativity, and perspectives between Jakarta and Berlin.
The panel session also featured Atika Nur Rahmania, Head of the Jakarta Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda), and Daniel Tumewu, AsiaBerlin Ambassador as well as CEO and Co-Founder of Hi Incubator. Through initiatives such as this, the Ministry of Creative Economy seeks to create more opportunities that connect creators, industry players, and international partners, ensuring that Jakarta’s growing creative momentum evolves into sustainable and globally competitive economic opportunities.
