Government Pushes for More Local Content on Netflix

Jakarta, June 18, 2025 — Deputy Minister of Creative Economy, Irene Umar, explored opportunities for collaboration with Netflix Indonesia to strengthen the global presence of Indonesian local content. Deputy Minister Irene encouraged global platforms to play a more active role in reinforcing Indonesia’s film ecosystem.

“We want to ensure that global platforms contribute to strengthening our national film ecosystem,” said Deputy Minister Irene during a meeting with representatives from Netflix Indonesia at Autograph Tower, Jakarta, on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.

The meeting marked an initial step toward building synergy between the government and international digital platforms in advancing the creative economy sector as the new engine of national growth. Deputy Minister Irene also emphasized that Netflix's impact on the local industry must go beyond content distribution.

“It’s not only about distribution, but also about sustainable investment, talent development, and expanding market access,” she stated.

Netflix’s representative, Ruben Hattari, Director of Global Affairs for Southeast Asia, expressed appreciation for the direction of Indonesia’s policy. He believes that original Indonesian content holds great potential to reach global audiences and affirmed Netflix’s readiness to be part of that journey.

“We see a tremendous opportunity to bring Indonesian stories to the global stage,” said Ruben.

“Indonesia’s film industry is growing rapidly. With the right training and support, this growth can be sustained in the long term,” he added.

This meeting provided an initial platform to discuss the potential contributions of global streaming services, such as Netflix, to supporting the development of Indonesia’s creative economy, particularly in terms of investment, distribution, and human capital development in the film and creative content sectors. The government welcomes this open dialogue as part of efforts to build inclusive and adaptive policies that align with industry development.

Deputy Minister Irene was accompanied by Deputy for Media Creativity Agustini Rahayu and Director of Film, Animation, and Video Doni Setiawan.
