Jakarta, July 23, 2026 – The Ministry of Creative Economy / Creative Economy Agency encourages PT Indobox Cinematic Buana to expand the distribution of national films through the development of modular cinemas (micro-cinemas) as community cinemas. This initiative is expected to open access for communities in regions that do not yet have cinemas, while creating new opportunities for creative economic growth.

“The Ministry of Creative Economy welcomes the various innovations and collaborations initiated by Indobox Cinema that can expand access to film distribution while also driving the creative economy in the regions. This is aligned with the spirit of Indobox Cinema, recognizing that creative economy hubs are widely spread across the country, ensuring that people in various regions have equal opportunities to enjoy the works of Indonesian filmmakers,” said Minister of Creative Economy Teuku Riefky Harsya during a meeting with PT Indobox Cinematic Buana at the Ministry of Creative Economy Office, Jakarta, Thursday (July 23).
The modular cinema solution is considered capable of addressing the issue that 74 percent of regencies/cities in Indonesia do not yet have cinemas. According to the Minister of Creative Economy, the presence of modular cinemas would not only serve as venues for film screenings but also become hubs for creative economy activities, opening opportunities for collaboration involving local businesses, communities, and creative talent across various regions.

“Collaboration with Indobox Cinema has significant potential to increase added value and downstream development in the film subsector. As access to national films expands, opportunities for filmmakers, creative economy practitioners, creative communities, and investors can grow more holistically together, further strengthening the spirit behind Indobox Cinema,” added Minister of Creative Economy Teuku Riefky Harsya.
Indobox Cinema is a network of modular cinemas (micro-cinemas) in Indonesia designed with more efficient investment requirements, shorter construction periods, and more affordable ticket prices. This investment model is intended to address disparities in cinema access, given that only 26 percent of regencies/cities in Indonesia have cinemas, with approximately 70 percent of them concentrated on Java.

“We believe that every city deserves access to quality entertainment. Through this meeting, we gained many new insights into encouraging the growth of the local creative economy for the national film industry. We hope the modular cinema concept can become a solution that provides quality entertainment, expands the distribution of Indonesian films, and creates a multiplier effect that increases employment opportunities for local communities,” said Budi Yulianto, President Commissioner of PT Indobox Cinematic Buana.
The Ministry of Creative Economy is ready to facilitate communication with Regional Governments regarding the utilization of underutilized public assets or land as locations for modular cinema units. This collaboration is also expected to serve as an official distribution channel for community-based independent films, documentaries, and regional films, further building a film ecosystem that is more inclusive, innovative, and competitive.
