Minister of Creative Economy Strengthens Indonesia Design Week 2026 to Expand Global Market Access

Jakarta, 28 July 2026 – Minister of Creative Economy/Head of the Creative Economy Agency (Ekraf), Teuku Riefky Harsya, reaffirmed the government’s full commitment to supporting the implementation of Indonesia Design Week (IDW) 2026. IDW 2026 is not only presented as a design exhibition, but also integrates discussion programs, workshops, community activations, and cross-sector collaborations that directly contribute to strengthening the national creative economy ecosystem.

“Essentially, the spirit of the Ministry of Creative Economy is aligned with IDD’s vision of developing local heroes to go national and national champions to go global. The government’s presence can be realized through policies, support, and collaboration. We will further assess what can be facilitated, as well as ways to strengthen the ecosystem, which is key to enabling creative economy players to continue growing and accessing global markets,” said Teuku Riefky during a meeting with the management of Indonesia Design District (IDD) at Autograph Tower, Jakarta, Tuesday (28/7).

The Minister of Creative Economy emphasized that Indonesia’s creative economy sector has demonstrated a highly positive growth trend. Its contributions to exports, investment realization, job creation, and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth have continued to increase. This encourages the Ministry of Creative Economy to place greater focus on accelerating highly competitive creative businesses through expanded market access, promotion, and international collaboration networks.

Based on the latest performance data, the creative economy sector’s contribution has exceeded the government’s target. Creative economy exports reached 120% of the target, accounting for approximately 12% of total national non-oil and gas exports. Statistics Indonesia (BPS) recorded that the crafts subsector contributed up to US$3.82 billion during the January–April 2026 period. In terms of investment, realization reached 134% of the target, while the creative economy’s contribution to national GDP reached 6.8%, exceeding the initial target of 5.5%.

“The Ministry of Creative Economy aims to strengthen Intellectual Property (IP) events and initiatives that have been developed by the private sector and communities. We are here to accelerate, curate, open market access, and support talents and creative economy entrepreneurs in moving up to the next level, including through the Creative by Indonesia program,” added the Minister of Creative Economy.

On the same occasion, IDD CEO Ipeng Widjojo presented plans for the implementation of IDW 2026, scheduled to take place from 18–27 September 2026 under the theme The Collective Culture. Previously, collaboration between the Ministry of Creative Economy and IDD had been established through the Open Call Local IP at IDW 2025, the Design Camp and VIP Lounge activations at the Ekraf Design Festival 2025, as well as IDD’s participation through the Indonesia Pavilion at Salone del Mobile. Milano and SaloneSatellite in April 2026.

“Indonesia Design Week is designed as a platform for appreciation at the national level, through a curation process and opportunities to showcase work at international events. We also aim to connect Indonesian design talents with the creative industry and global markets,” said Ipeng Widjojo.

One of the main agendas of IDW 2026 is the presentation of the Salone Satellite Permanent Collection. The presence of this prestigious collection makes Indonesia the third country in Asia, after Hong Kong and Japan (Osaka), entrusted to showcase it. The exhibition is projected to serve as both an educational platform and a source of inspiration for young Indonesian designers in understanding global design standards.

“The presence of the Salone Satellite Permanent Collection – Jakarta Chapter at IDW 2026 in PIK could serve as an important momentum to strengthen the capacity of young designers while demonstrating that Indonesia has design quality capable of competing at the international level,” said Ipeng Widjojo.

This exploration of collaboration also paves the way for Indonesia’s participation in Salone del Mobile Milano 2027 through the IDD Pavilion. Furthermore, the Minister of Creative Economy emphasized that the design subsector holds a strategic position that is not only closely connected to the crafts subsector, but also serves as a foundation for other creative economy subsectors. The planned integration of IDW 2026 with the World Conference on Creative Economy (WCCE) is expected to establish a sustainable network of strategic collaborations.

Accompanying Minister of Creative Economy Teuku Riefky during the meeting were Deputy for Cultural Creativity and Design, Yuke Sri Rahayu; Special Staff to the Minister for Communication, Media, and Public Services, Renanda Bachtar; Director of Architecture and Design, Sabar Norma Megawati; and Expert Advisor to the Minister for Strategic and Inter-Institutional Affairs, Gemintang Kejora Mallarangeng.
