“Magic performances in Indonesia are increasingly getting fewer opportunities to take the stage, even though this art form brings a unique sense of joy to its audiences. Therefore, let us collaborate to revitalize magic arts by utilizing Ekraf Creative Hubs as spaces for collaboration, business incubation, and capacity building for creative industry players,” said Irene Umar during a meeting at the Ministry of Creative Economy office on Wednesday (August 19).

Magic performance arts have a long history in Indonesia, ranging from traditional folk performances to modern stages. The sector has also produced talents who have brought pride to the nation on the global stage. Based on 2020 data from kumparan.com, the national magic ecosystem is supported by between 1,000 and 1,500 industry players, including performers, magic equipment sellers, hobbyists, and collectors.

“Let us move forward together and coordinate various forms of support from the Ministry of Creative Economy, particularly in preparing a creative hub for magic arts. Regarding ecosystem development and transparency regarding the needs of performing artists, I am ready to serve as a bridge so that this synergy can be implemented effectively,” added Irene Umar.

The Sacred Riana is one example of a successful local Intellectual Property (IP) that has entered the global market. She has received various international accolades, including winning Asia’s Got Talent 2017, becoming a finalist on America’s Got Talent Season 13, receiving the Les Mandrakes d'Or award in France, and being featured in the history of magic through Les Magiciennes.

“We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Deputy Minister Irene Umar for providing valuable input, engaging in discussions, and being willing to explore this collaboration with us. This support makes us very happy and has renewed our enthusiasm to revive and advance the magic arts industry in Indonesia,” said The Sacred Riana, an Indonesian magician.

As a concrete step toward future collaboration, the two parties are planning Arcana of Nusantara, which will be held five times a year in five different cities. The stage performance program will involve national and international magicians, regional artists, MSMEs, and will highlight Indonesian folklore and cultural heritage.
