Deputy Minister Encourages Textile and Creative Product Industries to Expand into Digital Markets

Jakarta, July 15, 2025 – Deputy Minister of Creative Economy Irene Umar received an audience from Threads of Life, a Bali-based gallery and center for traditional textile sales. This meeting reflects the Ministry’s commitment to empowering creative economy champions across the regions.

“We can preserve Indonesia’s culture and identity while also driving economic growth. Typically, we collaborate with partners based on market needs so we can find the right fit. Today’s conversation could open the door to even broader collaborations,” said Deputy Minister Irene during the audience held at Autograph Tower, Thamrin Nine, Jakarta, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

The session was also attended by Threads of Life CEO William Ingram, where discussions centered on opportunities to develop the textile industry. Threads of Life is known for its efforts to safeguard Indonesia’s textile traditions and ensure fair compensation for weavers, making sustainable commercialization strategies possible.

“The government is committed to driving commercialization in the creative economy, particularly by engaging younger generations. Each handwoven fabric carries knowledge and life experience, and it must be sold transparently and fairly. When a work exceeds basic quality standards, it should be eligible for royalties. We can also consider establishing intellectual property rights to open access to digital markets through NFTs and blockchain technology,” Irene emphasized.

William Ingram expressed his appreciation for the discussion, noting that it expanded their understanding of digital market access through creative technology. He highlighted that Threads of Life is not just a gallery but a platform that works with traditional communities—especially in Eastern Indonesia—to sustain weaving traditions.

“We focus on naturally dyed textiles to ensure the continuity of both identity and tradition. Handwoven fabric is meant to be touched and worn by anyone — it becomes a gateway to understanding local culture. I see that the Ministry of Creative Economy shares the same vision of striking a balance between cultural preservation and economic growth. We work with weavers to teach them about market access — such as what motifs are in demand — and we also learn the stories behind each design to add value to the product,” William explained.

The session also featured Cynthia from Impact Mangrove, an initiative focused on conserving mangrove ecosystems through tourism while creating creative products from recycled waste to improve the livelihoods of coastal communities dependent on mangroves.

“We want to create a creative tour along mangrove trails called Mangrove Magic . This will be an engaging experience to raise funds for mangrove conservation. During the tour, visitors can learn about Indonesia’s crucial role in protecting and sustaining mangrove ecosystems for future generations,” Cynthia added.

Deputy Minister Irene was accompanied by Craft Director Neli Yana and Fashion Director Romi Astuti during the meeting.
