Deputy Minister for Creative Economy: Campuses Are Centers of Innovation and the Birthplace of Creative Ideas

Jakarta, May 21, 2026 – Deputy Minister for Creative Economy/Deputy Head of the Creative Economy Agency, Irene Umar, emphasized that the creative economy must be able to generate tangible economic and social impacts. One of its key sources, according to the Deputy Minister, is higher education institutions.

Deputy Minister for Creative Economy Irene Umar served as a speaker at the 2026 National Coordination Meeting of the Indonesian Visual Communication Design Study Program Association (Rakornas Asprodi DKV) at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus), Semarang, Thursday (21/5/2026).

“For me, the most important thing about the creative economy is its ability to create something with financial value while also generating real impact. Campuses can become a sandbox where students directly engage with real-life situations, while lecturers and educators act as mentors for the younger generation,” said the Deputy Minister during her remarks at the 2026 National Coordination Meeting of the Indonesian Visual Communication Design Study Program Association (Rakornas Asprodi DKV) at Universitas Dian Nuswantoro (Udinus), Semarang, Thursday (21/5).

Carrying the theme “Accelerating the Role of Excellent, Impactful, and Sustainable Visual Communication Design Education in Strengthening the National Creative Economy,” the national coordination forum brought together heads of Visual Communication Design (DKV) study programs, lecturers, academics, and creative industry stakeholders from universities across Indonesia. The event served as a collaborative discussion platform to formulate strategic steps for developing DKV education that is relevant to the needs of the national creative industry.

The Deputy Minister emphasized the importance of universities as spaces for nurturing creative talents who are prepared to meet the demands of future industries. She also encouraged stronger collaboration between the government, campuses, and industries so that creative education outcomes could directly benefit regions and provide spaces for young creators to actualize their potential.

“We must truly extract the best creative potential from every individual and work together to face global challenges. That process must begin on campus, because campuses are centers of innovation and the birthplace of the purest ideas,” she explained.

According to the Deputy Minister, strengthening creative education through practice-based learning and cross-sector collaboration is a crucial foundation for building superior human resources toward Indonesia Emas. Through this approach, young talents will not only be capable of producing aesthetic works, but also of creating creative solutions with economic added value.

Rector of Universitas Dian Nuswantoro, Pulung Nurtantio Andono, stated that technological development has brought society into the era of immersive experiences, artificial intelligence, virtual interaction, digital twins, and meta-fresh ecosystems. Therefore, Udinus introduced a Next Generation Experience Learning Platform called Dinusverse. Dinusverse is an AI-based digital campus and virtual ecosystem concept that delivers learning, creativity, interaction, and university experiences in a more immersive, interactive, and enjoyable way.

“The next generation experience learning platform is designed as a game-based learning system. The platform uses Roblox. Through Udinus First, students will complete attendance through Roblox connected to real-life activities. If a student achieves something, for example winning a national basketball championship, the achievement emblem will appear on their avatar,” he explained.

He further added that the Roblox character could become a digital portfolio later transformed into an NFT and stored using blockchain technology. In addition, Udinus has become the first university in Indonesia to implement blockchain technology for diplomas and academic transcripts.
