Deputy Minister of Creative Economy: Digital Printing Technology as a Solution for Traditional Artisans to Earn Royalties

Jakarta, January 17, 2025 – Licensing and royalties. These two keywords underpin the Ministry of Creative Economy/Creative Economy Agency in its efforts to encourage creative economy players to continue growing.

During a meeting between the Deputy Minister of Creative Economy/Deputy Head of the Creative Economy Agency Irene Umar and Anthony Liem, Director of Digital Printing Indonesia, the potential for developing the fashion industry was discussed. Deputy Minister Irene highlighted that digital printing could be a solution for creative economy players, especially traditional artisans, to receive royalties.

"We also want to introduce the various technologies available in Indonesia. So far, we have known batik through various production methods, from handmade batik to stamped batik, and then there is printed batik. Through printed batik, traditional batik artisans can still obtain licensing and royalties if their batik motifs are transferred into digital printing," said Deputy Minister of Creative Economy Irene during an audience held at Menara Merdeka, Jakarta, on Friday, January 17, 2025.

Accompanied by Yuke Sri Rahayu, Deputy for Cultural Creativity and Design at the Ministry of Creative Economy, Deputy Minister Irene also observed printed versions of the Creative Economy logo applied to tenun-patterned sarongs and hijabs. She hopes that the use of digital printing technology will not only help preserve traditional batik or tenun artisans but also open up opportunities for fashion entrepreneurs to collaborate.

Meanwhile, Yuke Sri Rahayu, as Deputy for Cultural Creativity and Design at the Ministry of Creative Economy, appreciated the idea of promoting traditional artisans' crafts by applying digital printing technology to the fabric. According to Yuke, it is not only batik artisans who can benefit from licensing opportunities through digital printing but also tenun artisans from other regions, such as Toraja and Toba.

"Support from fashion business players is needed to realize this collaboration. So far, the Ministry of Creative Economy has been actively supporting traditional batik makers and weavers, and we want this momentum to continue. Of course, we hope that this collaboration opportunity will progress further in the future," said Yuke.

This hope was met with a positive response from Anthony Liem, Director of Digital Printing Indonesia. He stated that the purpose of his presentation to the Ministry of Creative Economy was to create business collaborations across different creative economy sub-sectors.

"I am very happy to be here to discuss this matter because the enthusiasm from Deputy Minister of Creative Economy Irene and the Ministry of Creative Economy team toward my vision is remarkable. In my view, the Ministry of Creative Economy has done an excellent job in transforming Indonesia’s creative economy. After all, we have a history that we must respect while also adapting to modern times and technological advancements. We must not lose our Indonesian identity, but at the same time, we should also express ourselves on a global scale," said Anthony Liem.
