Jakarta, January 16, 2025 – Deputy Minister of Creative Economy/Deputy Head of the Creative Economy Agency, Irene Umar, together with Deputy Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (WamenPPPA), Veronica Tan, and Head of the Jakarta Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda), Atika Nur Rahmania, expressed mutual support for the structuring and development of Jakarta’s Old Town (Kota Tua).
During a meeting at the Jakarta City Hall on Thursday, January 16, 2025, Deputy Minister of Creative Economy Irene emphasized the importance of transforming Kota Tua into an attractive hub for creative economic growth.
"Utilizing public spaces for creative economy development can enhance the economic income of the surrounding communities. Kota Tua has always been a tourist destination because of its uniqueness, and this area also holds potential for further development in its surrounding regions," said Irene.
She also suggested that Kota Tua could offer an immersive experience by activating public spaces and installing local Intellectual Property (IP) photo booths.
"In preparation for Jakarta's 500th anniversary, we could create a storyline that reflects the city's history, culture, and civilization. Vacant or underutilized spaces can be repurposed to sell creative economy products. For a more engaging experience, we can add photo spots and board game zones throughout Kota Tua," Irene explained.
Head of Jakarta’s Bappeda, Atika Nur Rahmania, emphasized the importance of preserving Kota Tua through sustainable initiatives. She suggested developing social economy concepts, comfortable pedestrian pathways, and heritage preservation programs. These could be complemented by cultural experiences that stimulate economic growth and improve the welfare of local communities.
"Kota Tua could become a hub for young people to engage with historical and cultural experiences. Approaching Jakarta’s 500th anniversary, this initiative could generate employment opportunities and attract tourists, creating significant creative value," added WamenPPPA Veronica Tan.
The revitalization of Kota Tua could involve creating several zones focused on business, tourism, and creative attractions, such as performance stages. The aim is to foster a system that benefits creative economy players while ensuring that the area's development aligns with environmental sustainability efforts, such as urban greening.
