Deputy Minister of Creative Economy Visits Comic Frontier, Says Local Creators Are Ready to Go Global

Jakarta, May 24, 2025 – Deputy Minister of Creative Economy, Irene Umar, visited Comic Frontier, Indonesia’s largest comic and animation event, as part of the government’s support for local creators. During the visit, Deputy Minister Irene also viewed works from creators who have registered with the Ekraf Hunt program.

"This event is joined by 1,600 creators from Southeast Asia and several from East Asia. What does this mean? Indonesia is no longer just showing potential – we simply need to give it a push to reach the global market," said Deputy Minister Irene at the event, which took place at ICE BSD, Tangerang Regency, on Saturday, May 24, 2025.

Comic Frontier is held twice a year, focusing on Japanese pop culture, including comics and animations. This year, the event runs from May 24 to 25, 2025. A total of 200 local creators are participating in this year’s event.

Deputy Minister Irene expressed the Ministry of Creative Economy’s readiness to support creators in taking their work to the next level, including through the Ekraf Hunt program – a database of creative economy players managed directly by the Ministry to promote local intellectual property (IP).

"Our creators are producing excellent work – all they need is a platform. What kind of platform? It could be games, comics, films, and many others. That’s why the Ministry of Creative Economy is here: to help facilitate commercialization and distribution. And the good news is that many of them are already participating in major festivals like Comic Frontier," Deputy Minister Irene added.

Meanwhile, Public Relations representative of Comic Frontier, Fadhil, explained that the event began as a small community of comic and illustration book enthusiasts. Starting from a campus event, Comic Frontier gradually earned popularity and managed to host its own independent event in 2015.

"Comic Frontier is driven by the community, so we could never have grown this big without them. It is the creators who showcase their work – we simply provide a space for those who want to display and sell their creations," said Fadhil.

"That is why we hope that, with the support of the Ministry of Creative Economy, creators and communities can take their work to the next level. We want to connect these producers with their consumers, and we hope Indonesian creators will continue to grow so they can engage with both the national and international creative industries," Fadhil added.
