Government to Hold Inaugural Chinese New Year Festival, Highlighting Harmony in the Spirit of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika

Jakarta, 28 January 2026 — The Government will hold the inaugural Chinese New Year Festival, carrying forward the values of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika in the spirit of inclusivity, diversity, and interfaith harmony. Chinese New Year, as the celebration of the Lunar New Year, is understood as a new beginning and is celebrated by all segments of society.

The inaugural Chinese New Year Festival will be held from 17 February to 3 March 2026 at Lapangan Banteng, Jakarta, under the tagline Harmoni Nusantara. Taking place concurrently with the holy month of Ramadan, the Chinese New Year celebration will serve as a space for interfaith reflection and engagement among communities.

“Chinese New Year Festival 2026 is a national celebration that presents Chinese New Year as a shared cultural heritage. Coinciding with Ramadan, this momentum reflects an Indonesia that is harmonious, inclusive, and mutually respectful in its diversity,” said Chairperson of the National Chinese New Year Organizing Committee, Irene Umar.

This national Chinese New Year celebration is also part of the efforts of the Red and White Cabinet, led by President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto, to strengthen national unity and harmony in social life.

The Chinese New Year Festival will feature a Lantern Festival in various cities, culinary, arts, and creative market festivals, an open museum showcasing the acculturation of Chinese culture, the Nusantara Chinese New Year Parade, as well as the peak of the National Chinese New Year celebration, designed as an open and inclusive festivity for the wider public.

In addition to the main series of events in Jakarta, Chinese New Year Festival 2026 will also be celebrated through national activations in various cities across Indonesia, including Singkawang, Palembang, Solo, Semarang, Manado, and Makassar, as well as other cities such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan, Bogor, Batam, and Pontianak. These celebrations will present diverse regional expressions of Chinese New Year culture in the spirit of Harmoni Nusantara.
