Indonesia’s Creative Economy Shows Strong Promise, BPS: Sector Employs 27.4 Million Workers

Jakarta, 16 December 2025 — The Ministry of Creative Economy / Creative Economy Agency has received the creative economy statistical report from Statistics Indonesia (BPS), which highlights the sector’s performance exceeding national targets. BPS data record that employment in the creative economy reached 27.4 million workers, accounting for 18.70 percent of the total employed population.

Menteri Ekonomi Kreatif, Teuku Riefky Harsya, menerima laporan statistik ekonomi kreatif dari Kepala BPS Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS), Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, dalam acara Sinergi dan Kolabiorasi Data Ekonomi Kreatif yang berlangsung di Grand Hyatt, Jakarta, Selasa (16/12/2025).

“In 2025, there was a remarkable increase in creative economy employment, which certainly contributes significantly to job absorption in Indonesia. The data show that this sector has absorbed 27.4 million workers, underscoring the importance of the creative economy to Indonesia’s economy,” said the Head of Statistics Indonesia (BPS), Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, during the presentation of the report to the Ministry of Creative Economy on Tuesday, 16 December 2025.

The report covers achievements in employment, exports, and contributions to Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The number of creative economy workers reaching 27.4 million exceeded the 2025 target of 25.55 million. In addition, more than 50 percent of creative economy workers are under the age of 40, indicating that the sector serves as a relevant source of new employment opportunities for younger generations.

Another positive achievement is the strengthening contribution of the creative economy to national GDP. BPS recorded that the creative economy’s contribution to GDP at current prices (ADHB) in 2024 reached IDR 1,611.2 trillion, accounting for 7.28 percent of national GDP.

The contribution of the creative economy to Indonesia’s overall economy has risen, with creative economy GDP growth reaching 6.57 percent in 2024, surpassing national economic growth of 5.03 percent,” explained the Head of BPS.

In terms of exports, the creative economy also recorded positive performance, with export values from January to October 2025 reaching USD 26.68 billion, or 11.96 percent of total national non-oil and gas exports, exceeding the 2025 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) target of USD 26.44 billion. The fashion subsector contributed the largest share at USD 14.86 billion, followed by crafts at USD 11.10 billion. The United States remains the primary export destination, followed by Switzerland and Japan.

The Minister of Creative Economy, Teuku Riefky Harsya, stated that these achievements cannot be separated from the strategic role of BPS in providing accurate and sustainable data. According to the Minister, creative economy statistics serve as an essential foundation for formulating data-driven policies aligned with the needs of creative practitioners in the regions.

“I would like to express my appreciation to BPS. This collaboration was established in 2010, experienced a pause, and in 2025 we revived it as part of the implementation of Asta Ekraf, particularly Ekraf Data, to strengthen data-driven policy making,” said Minister of Creative Economy Teuku Riefky.

The Minister further emphasized that these achievements demonstrate that the creative economy has transformed into a tangible economic force. The data are aligned with the spirit of the creative economy as the new engine of growth.
