Deputy Minister Irene shared this during a meeting with Hero Esports at the Pesona Indonesia Film Building, Jakarta, on Thursday, April 17, 2025. She highlighted several important points for the organizing team to consider, as this momentum could position Indonesia, especially Jakarta, as one of Asia’s key esports hubs.
“Building an esports hub requires strong commitment, especially as Jakarta will soon host a Southeast Asian championship. In 2027, as Jakarta celebrates its 500th anniversary, we want to transform Jakarta into an esports city — and that development must start now. With such commitment, we can unlock vast business opportunities so that esports tournaments attract international visitors to Jakarta’s esports center,” said Deputy Minister Irene during the meeting.
She also pointed out the numerous business opportunities available as Jakarta hosts PMSL-SEA. One of them, she mentioned, is integrating local Intellectual Properties (IPs) into the esports ecosystem.
“Esports is not only about the players or gamers — there are many elements to consider in making Indonesian esports gain global attention. Collaborating with local IPs is a great example of meaningful synergy at this time, particularly by creating attractive merchandise and involving local brands in their production,” explained Deputy Minister Irene, who was accompanied by Director of Games, Luat S.P. Sihombing.

The PUBG Mobile Super League has received full support from PB ESI (Indonesian Esports Executive Board). Meanwhile, Hero Esports — the largest esports company in Asia — organizes 7,000 matches annually and reaches more than 800 million fans through prestigious tournaments.
Stefano Adrian, Project Manager at Hero Esports, expressed that the meeting with Deputy Minister Irene had been very insightful and opened doors for potential collaboration to strengthen Indonesia’s esports ecosystem.
“I truly appreciate the guidance provided by the Ministry of Creative Economy. It allows us to further strengthen the ecosystem so that it can compete with other countries. Through gaming, we can also showcase Indonesia’s rich culture, as the country is already well-known for its loyal fan base at every tournament. Our hope is for the esports industry in Indonesia to grow to the level of conventional sports like football or badminton,” said Stefano.
