Minister of Creative Economy Supports Strengthening Visual Communication Design to Connect Downstreaming and Monetization

Jakarta, 7 August 2025 – The Minister of Creative Economy, Teuku Riefky Harsya, received the Association of Visual Communication Design Study Programs (Asprodi DKV) to discuss strengthening synergy between the government and the academic sector in promoting the downstreaming of graphic design works. Minister Teuku Riefky highlighted the importance of transforming student projects from the academic environment into creative economy products based on globally competitive Intellectual Property (IP).

Menteri Ekonomi Kreatif, Teuku Riefky Harsya, menerima audiensi Asosiasi Program Studi Desain Komunikasi Visual (Asprodi DKV) untuk membahas penguatan sinergi antara pemerintah dan dunia akademik, Jakarta, Kamis (07/08/2025).

“I agree that student works, especially those from universities under Asprodi DKV, need international recognition, continuous adaptation to technological developments, and encouragement for downstreaming. Their work should not stop on paper; what matters is how it can be monetized. Moreover, many Indonesian IPs are now showing potential to become global brands. What we need is stronger collaboration between VCD and the Ministry of Creative Economy so that downstreaming and monetization become truly connected and broadly impactful,” said Minister Teuku Riefky at the Ministry’s office in Jakarta, Thursday, 7 August 2025.

Asprodi DKV is a national organization overseeing 90 Visual Communication Design (VCD) study programs across Indonesian universities, with approximately 25,000 students under its umbrella. The organization plays a strategic role in aligning educational standards, developing curricula, and facilitating synergy among universities in responding to the dynamics of the creative industry. This meeting also serves as a follow-up to the Creative Economy Higher Education Consortium (KPT-Ekraf), established in May 2025 as a collaborative platform among universities to strengthen the national creative economy ecosystem through academic contributions.

“Regarding the creative economy consortium, although it is still in the form of a community among public and private universities, the shared spirit is already aligned toward developing the creative industry, including VCD. I also agree that VCD is closely connected to other creative economy subsectors. However, to ensure focus and direction, we do need to give special attention to its development,” explained Minister Teuku Riefky.

The Chairperson of Asprodi DKV, Intan R. Mutiaz, stated that consolidation between academia and industry is increasingly important to ensure that curricula, creative works, and research produced by universities contribute meaningfully to the national economy.

“VCD today is not only about visual arts but also encompasses technology, culture, and business. Through the Creative Economy Consortium, we hope to strengthen this interdisciplinary approach so that works such as illustrations and IPs have market value and economic identity, not merely aesthetic value. Indonesia has a strategic position in culture-based and digital creative industries, but maximizing it requires continuous innovation and cross-sector collaboration,” said Intan.

Furthermore, the Minister’s Expert Staff for Innovation and Creativity, Dian Permanasari, added that collaboration with associations such as Asprodi DKV will be vital in formulating policy direction for the Visual Communication Design subsector, which already has its own classification in the Indonesian Standard Industrial Classification (KBLI).

“Visual Communication Design is a creative economy subsector with a KBLI code that falls under the full authority of the Ministry of Creative Economy, without overlap with other ministries. Therefore, we are responsible for preparing its development roadmap, and strong collaboration with associations is essential to ensure alignment with industry needs,” said Expert Staff Dian.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthen collaboration between the government, academia, and industry to accelerate IP downstreaming and the development of the national VCD ecosystem.
