“We need to build a shared ecosystem first in order to make a major leap in realizing concrete action plans between Indonesia and Korea. Sustainable collaboration in the film and music subsectors must be implemented more tangibly through initiatives shaped by strong public diplomacy, considering the immense popularity of K-pop in the Indonesian market,” said Deputy Minister of Creative Economy Irene Umar during the meeting with the KOCCA delegation at Autograph Tower Thamrin Nine, Jakarta, on Monday, 12 January 2026.

The Deputy Minister expressed hope that synergy could be created through interconnected ecosystems or platforms. She also emphasized the importance of continuously exploring film productions that are bolder, more distinctive, and more deeply rooted in culture.

This is in line with KOCCA’s commitment to talent development across film, animation, music, comics, broadcasting, video games, fashion, and new-technology convergence content. Deputy Minister Irene Umar expects collaboration with KOCCA to be mutually beneficial by leveraging Indonesia’s vast market potential and rich cultural assets, while opening broader global opportunities.

“In filmmaking, we can align our shared aspirations, as each country possesses cultural aspects that inspire and offer room to explore ideas and future collaborations. Such initiatives can strengthen bilateral relations and deepen mutual understanding of the creative industries in both countries,” said Deputy Minister Irene Umar, accompanied by the Director of Film, Animation, and Video, Doni Setiawan.

At the same meeting, KOCCA Indonesia Regional Director Lee Gi Haun highlighted collaborative ideas to bring Indonesian talents to Korea. He expressed confidence that Indonesia’s positive image could be well represented through the presence of talented Indonesian musicians.

“For the film subsector, we believe Indonesian films are already strong and can be further developed together to reach an even higher level. Meanwhile, in the music subsector, we aim to facilitate Indonesian talents to come to Korea or enter wider international networks. In this way, they can integrate with local cultures and generate more collaborations in the future,” said Lee Gi Haun, who was accompanied by Korean actor Lee Won Jung of RUNUP Company, COO of RUNUP Company Choi Do Suk, and General Manager Izzati Amara Isman.

Meanwhile, COO of RUNUP Company Choi Do Suk conveyed his optimism regarding the potential for Indonesia–Korea collaboration in the creative industries.

“By combining the synergy between Indonesia’s strong filmmaking techniques and its rich variety of locations with Korea’s well-structured scriptwriting strengths, or by sharing experiences on how K-pop and K-content achieved global recognition, we aim to play a significant role in elevating Indonesian content to a higher level,” said Choi Do Suk.
