Ministry of Creative Economy Supports Documentary Film Festival, Strengthens Competitive Spirit and Creative Talent of Young Creators

Jakarta, 24 November 2025 — The Ministry of Creative Economy/Creative Economy Agency supports the 2025 Documentary Film Festival (FFD), one of Indonesia’s oldest and most consistent documentary festivals. Minister of Creative Economy/Head of the Creative Economy Agency Teuku Riefky Harsya emphasized that documentaries are a strategic medium to strengthen public literacy and drive knowledge-based creative economy.

Kementerian Ekonomi Kreatif/Badan Ekonomi Kreatif mendukung Festival Film Dokumenter (FFD) 2025 yang berlangsung di Langgeng Art Foundation, Yogyakarta.

“Documentaries are not only audiovisual works, but also archives, reflections, and public education. The Ministry of Creative Economy views FFD as an important platform to enhance creators’ competencies, build a data- and research-based ecosystem, and foster hexahelix collaborations that strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesian creators,” said Minister Teuku Riefky on Monday, 24 November 2025.

FFD 2025 opened on 21 November 2025 at the Langgeng Art Foundation, Yogyakarta, and will run until 28 November 2025. The festival includes film screenings, discussions, workshops, and networking forums that expand public access to knowledge and creative practices.

FFD continues to present works that enhance public literacy, expand alternative screening ecosystems, and nurture emerging talent, serving as a vital foundation for the growth of an inclusive and sustainable national film ecosystem.

Previously, the Ministry of Creative Economy held an audience with FFD representatives on 22 October 2025 at Autograph Tower. Led by Deputy Minister Irene Umar, the meeting addressed key challenges faced by documentary creators, including monetization, financial sustainability, and limited screening opportunities.

The dialogue emphasized the need to strengthen the documentary value chain and expand distribution networks, including partnerships with digital platforms, to allow Indonesian documentaries to reach broader audiences. Deputy for Media Creativity Agustini Rahayu highlighted the festival’s role in supporting a sustainable national film ecosystem.

“FFD provides a fundamental contribution to building a critical viewing culture, expanding knowledge distribution, and creating space for young filmmakers to experiment. Festivals like this enhance creators’ capacity and help regions grow into creative hubs that generate new economic opportunities,” said Deputy Agustini.

FFD 2025 marks its 24th edition with a theme celebrating diverse perspectives and the relevance of documentaries in society. Through curated programs, screenings, educational forums, and discussions, the festival serves as a key meeting space for filmmakers, academics, film communities, students, and the public to develop critical understanding aligned with Indonesia Emas 2045, which positions creativity as a primary driver of economic transformation.

The Ministry of Creative Economy’s support for FFD this year reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening the national film ecosystem from upstream to downstream: from enhancing creator capacity, research-based production facilities, expanded screening access, to monetization opportunities through cross-sector strategic partnerships. Collaboration between the documentary community, educational institutions, and industry stakeholders is expected to create a more inclusive, competitive, and sustainable creative space.

The Ministry affirms that educational, research, and public dialogue platforms such as FFD are essential foundations for creating a resilient and adaptive film ecosystem while reinforcing the position of the creative economy as the new engine of growth.
