Jakarta, February 4, 2025 – The Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov DKJ), in collaboration with the Tempo Film Festival, organized the Malam Insan Film event themed "Towards Jakarta, A Global City of Cinema", at Balai Agung, Balai Kota Jakarta, on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. Minister of Creative Economy/Head of the Creative Economy Agency Teuku Riefky Harsya also expressed his support for making Jakarta a Cinema City.
"The Ministry of Creative Economy is ready to collaborate in activating Jakarta as a Creative Economy City, particularly in the film sector, by implementing various creative economy initiatives from 2025 to 2027 in celebration of Jakarta’s 500th anniversary. These include activities that support Jakarta’s status as a Global City of Cinema," said Minister of Creative Economy Riefky.
"A Cinema City is important because cinema reflects culture. There are around 50 films set in Jakarta, showcasing its dynamic cinematic richness. This should be a catalyst to make Jakarta a truly special Cinema City. Hopefully, this is our collective effort not to curse the darkness but to light a candle," said Arif Zulkifli, CEO of Tempo Media Group, which will also be organizing the Tempo Film Festival.

"The creative economy, particularly the film industry, has become one of the main pillars in shaping cultural identity, creating quality jobs, and enhancing global competitiveness," added Minister Riefky.
"We need to continue strengthening the film industry ecosystem by facilitating access to financing, expanding market reach, simplifying production permits, and improving the quality of human resources, as well as the quality of film production and distribution in the global market," Minister of Creative Economy Riefky continued, accompanied by Deputy for Media Creativity at the Ministry of Creative Economy, Agustini Rahayu.
Minister of Creative Economy Riefky emphasized that the film industry is not just about entertainment but also serves as a tool for international diplomacy that introduces Indonesia's creative economy products to the world. Intellectual property protection, such as for films, remains a challenge in realizing the creative economy as a new engine of national economic growth.

"Film serves as a foundation that strengthens public confidence. In 2024, out of approximately 82 million cinema-goers, 65% watched Indonesian films. For Malam Insan Film Jakarta, which should become an ongoing event, it is essential to implement a hexahelix collaboration model involving six key stakeholders: the government (regional governments), academia, business associations, communities, media, and financial institutions," said Minister of Creative Economy Riefky.
"We appreciate Pemprov DKJ and Tempo Group for initiating Malam Insan Film as an effort to continuously support the national film ecosystem, reinforcing Jakarta’s ambition to become a Cinema City in celebration of its 500th anniversary. Cinema is not just about art; it is also a vital pillar of the creative economy, allowing filmmakers to portray the life and development of Jakarta."

The event was also attended by Acting Governor of Jakarta, Teguh Setyabudi; former Governor of Jakarta (1997-2007), Sutiyoso; former Acting Governor of Jakarta (2016-2017), Soni Sumarsono; Jakarta’s Deputy Governor-Elect (2025-2030), Rano Karno; Head of the Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Office, Andika Permata; Chairman of the Indonesian Film Festival, Ario Bayu; senior actor Slamet Rahardjo, as well as several representatives from Indonesia’s film industry.
"The film industry ecosystem needs improvement. Filming in the Netherlands is cheaper than in Jakarta. Shooting at a train station in the Netherlands costs €2,000, but you still get a rebate.
Filming at Changi Airport is cheaper than at Soekarno-Hatta. This needs to be fixed. I am pleased that the Minister mentioned working with the Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda), as this presents a great opportunity for improvement," said Rano Karno.
